Player ratings as five-star Spurs run riot

Tottenham Hotspur emphatically ended their run of three Premier League games without a win by demolishing bottom of the table Southampton 5-0 at St Mary’s.

The Lilywhites were up and running in the first minute of the game thanks to the recalled James Maddison, who latched onto Djed Spence’s terrific through ball to strike past Alex McCarthy.

Son Heung-min doubled the lead, drilling home at the back post, before Dejan Kulusevski reacted quickest in Southampton‘s penalty area to make it three before the quarter-hour mark.

A shell-shocked Saints sacrificed Kamaldeen Sulemana to try and turn things around, but things got worse for Russell Martin and his reshuffled side as Pape Matar Sarr waltzed past some timid defending to make it four after 25 minutes.

Maddison, starting in midfield alongside Sarr and Lucas Bergvall, added further salt to the Saints’ first-half wounds, superbly firing into the top corner from an acute angle after Son had played a wonderfully weighted pass with the outside of his boot in behind Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek.

Southampton got through the second half unscathed but remain rooted to the bottom with 13 defeats to their name after 16 games – their goal difference now a dismal -25 after this latest implosion. Spurs, meanwhile, are up into the top half of the Premier League table after Brentford’s defeat at London rivals Chelsea.

Spurs climb into the top half of the Premier League table as a result of their breathtaking win, while Southampton remain rooted to the bottom with 13 defeats to their name after 16 games – their goal difference now a dismal -25 after this latest implosion.
