Is Spence Finished? Fundora Thinks He Can Win

Sebastian Furdora says his next title defense of his WBC and WBO junior middleweight belts “should” be against Errol Spence. Fans have mixed feelings about Fundora, 6’5 1/2″, fighting the burned-out-looking Spence because he’s not performed well since his car crash on October 10, 2019.

Is Spence Washed?

Errol has fought just three times in the last four years since 2020, and he’s been out of the ring since suffering a ninth-round knockout against Terence Crawford on July 30, 2023. In that fight, Spence looked like a broken shell of the fighter he’d been years earlier.

Spence’s Activity Since 2020

– Terence Crawford: TKO 9 Loss
– Yordenis Ugas: UD 12 win
– Danny Garcia: UD 12 win

His reflexes, speed, and power were gone. He took a beating from Crawford, who was made to look better than he actually was by how physically depleted Spence appeared. During the interview the fight, you could tell that Spence was not right. He sounded like he had a mouth full of marbles and was speaking in slow motion.

Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) and the former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 21 KOs) have been mentioned as fighting next since Sebastian’s victory over WBO 154-lb champion Tim Tszyu on March 30th earlier this year.

Spence entered the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas immediately following Fundora’s 12-round split decision against Tszyu, making it clear they would be fighting next.

“That should be next. I think that’s going to be a good fight with a lot of action. He throws a lot of punches. I throw a lot of punches,” said Sebastian Fundora to BoxNation about him and Errol Spence fighting next. “He’s a come-forward fighter. I consider myself that as well. It would be good for the Mexican fans in America.”

Fundora’s Opportunity

Unsurprisingly, Fundora, 26, is excited about fighting Spence because his chances of winning would be high. Fans would much prefer to see Fundora take on someone more convincing, like IBF 154-lb champion Bakhram Murtazaliev next rather than Spence. At least that fight would be more sporting.

Fundora is viewed as a vulnerable paper champion who will only hold onto his title as long as he’s matched carefully. His title reign will end if he fights someone of quality like Murtazaliev, Vergil Ortiz Jr, Serhii Bohachuk, or Israil Madrimov.

Fundora should be fighting a rematch against Brian Mendoza to avenge his seventh-round knockout loss on April 8, 2023. That was only a year ago, and he’s not done anything to go in the direction of fighting Mendoza again.
